The Life Of Saint Elizabeth Mother of John the Baptist

In a world where mysteries unfold through divine interventions, the story of Elizabeth stands as a testament to the profound narratives that form the bedrock of the Christian religion. Elizabeth, a priestly woman from the Bible and mother of John the Baptist, offers a riveting tale of faith and miracles.

Barren and in her advanced years, Elizabeth received an unexpected message that dramatically altered her life’s trajectory. In the sixth month, greeted by the Angel Gabriel, she was told: “Blessed are you among women, Elizabeth, for you will bear a child.”

The Bible doesn’t explicitly tell us her reaction, but one can imagine her astonishment! Yet, fortified by her faith, Elizabeth took the divine proclamation to heart. Thus, Elizabeth was known as the one whose womb leaped for joy.

She was pregnant, and the child she was destined to bear had a prophetic name: John. This child would go on to play a crucial role in the unfolding of the Christian faith, preparing the path for the coming of Jesus Christ.

The Historic Lineage: Elizabeth and Zechariah, the Parents of John the Baptist

Elizabeth, often recognized as Saint Elizabeth, was a descendant of Aaron and is well-known as the mother of John the Baptist. She was married to Zechariah, a priest from Judea. The couple was blameless, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, but they were childless, which was seen as a hardship because Elizabeth was barren.

The Bible says an angel, Gabriel, appeared to Zechariah, and told him that his prayer is heard, his wife Elizabeth would conceive a son in her old age, and they would call his name John. The birth of John was indeed a momentous event in the narrative of the Gospel of Luke.

Significance of the Name ‘John’: A Divine Naming by Zechariah

The name John holds deep significance. It was not a random choice, but a name specifically mentioned by the angel Gabriel. Despite the customary practice to name the child after his father, Zechariah, being filled with the Holy Spirit, insisted that his son’s name would be John, obeying the divine instruction given to him. This act of faith marked a turning point in Zechariah’s narrative and confirmed his obedience to God’s command.

The Story of Elizabeth and the Birth of her Son John in the Gospel of Luke

Luke’s Gospel provides the most detailed account of Elizabeth and the birth of her son, John. It includes the visit of the Angel Gabriel to Zechariah, the miraculous conception despite Elizabeth being barren, and the visitation of Mary, who was also expecting a child.

It’s during this visit that the famous phrase “blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” was spoken by Elizabeth, upon hearing Mary’s greeting.

Luke 1:5-7

Apostle Luke introduces Zechariah and Elizabeth, describing their righteous lives and their childlessness due to Elizabeth’s barrenness.

5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

Luke 1:8-17

These verses give Zechariah’s encounter with the Angel Gabriel during his priestly duties in the temple. Gabriel tells Zechariah that Elizabeth will bear a son, who is to be named John.

8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,

9 According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Luke 1:18-25

Finally, Luke recounts Zechariah’s disbelief, the penalty for his doubt (he is made mute), and the subsequent conception of John.

18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
